Sonar contact at 500ft
It's a dreich Wednesday afternoon on Loch Ness and we had 12 adventurers aboard Spirit of Loch Ness for our final sailing of the day.
Just at the turning point of the cruise, off Invermoriston, we spotted a Sea Eagle swooping down....a very rare and wonderous sight on Loch Ness indeed. However, just moments later, Ronald, our MD and captain for the day, returned his eyes to the sonar screen to find an even more breathtaking sight....a large crescent shaped object displaying boldly slap bang in the middle of the display.
The object is the largest contact he has seen in his 30 years on the loch. We have had lots of unexplained sonar contacts in the past but nothing like this one. Ronald said he immediately felt excited and couldn't wait to tell the rest of the crew and the passengers onboard. There was such a buzz. Ronald then sent a screen shot by text to Steve Feltham, the loch's resident monster hunter and long term friend and he convinced us to go public. The hype has been unbelievable. Sonar experts have confirmed that the 'creature' is around 33ft in length and is hovering 50m off the loch bed, some 500ft down. What it is, no-one knows, but something is lurking down there.
To explain a little better what you can see in this sonar contact image...The red line at the top of the image represents the surface of the loch and boat's direction of travel. Every dot, blob and coloured area below it represents the sonar sound wave bouncing off a surface. Those surfaces will either be fish (usually blue or green dots) or loch bed (large bold red/orange/yellow coloured area shown at the bottom).
So what do you think.....have we found her??
Book a cruise with us today and come along and see the sonar in action and have your own chance of catching sight of something unknown in the deep waters of Loch Ness.
